1 out of 5 stars Time for this Director to Retire   February 14, 2008
Michelle Troxel (Seattle, WA USA)
I am still having a hard time believing that this made it to theaters. It was terrible. I watch quite a few horror films on a regular basis, not to mention a weekly horror film day, so for me to say that this was one of the most dreadful, mind-numbing movies I have viewed in a long time should say something.

I will not give away too much for those who wish to see it, but some warning needs to be given. It starts out with the first murder, which was a bit disturbing and gave the movie a good start. You reach this point and think, "Hey, that was fun, this could be good..." However it was all down hill from there. The entire movie was predictable - there were NO surprises. They stereotyped every serial killer movie ever made and threw it into a very boring hour and a half. The characters were not believable, the acting terrible and the plot weak. They even had to add in a bit about how the killer was sexually abused and this is why he now kidnaps and murders young people. It was just sad.

Do not waste your money on this one.

1 out of 5 stars Non-thrilling "Thriller"   January 19, 2008
J. Luhman (Minnesota, USA)
I was very dissapointed. From the onset, the movie was unbelievable and the audience was provided no real reason to like or care about any of the characters. There are much better thriller/horror movies than this. I fast-forwarded through most of the latter half of the movie, and in the end, I wished I hadn't wasted my time...

2 out of 5 stars Looks More Like "Saw 2.5" ... and Not Thrilling   September 30, 2007
Tsuyoshi
Originally I was intrigued by the name of Larry Cohen, veteran writer who was responsible for recent thrillers like "Phone Booth" and "Cellular" (for the latter he provided the story), but US-Russian co-production "Captivity" looks more like the hit franchise "Saw" (distributed by the same company Lionsgate) or "The Hostel" with its situations and tortures.

Elisha Cuthbert is Jennifer, supermodel who finds herself abducted by someone and has to go through a series of grueling experiences. This kind of horrific incident is not improbable and the photography effectively shows the horror of being confined in the narrow space, but it soon turns out that the story does not have much to tell us after the set-up. The amount of gore may depends on the version you will see (and I am sorry that I am not quite sure what version I saw, but I saw it in Japan), but the film certainly needs more suspense to sustain its 90 minutes.

The film includes such torture scenes as "blender scene" or "dog scene" - I leave the details to your imagination - but none of them really works because they only prolong the running time of the film without making any sense after all. The final 30 minutes are filled with incredible coincidences and stupid decisions of the characters, leading us to the head-scratching conclusion. It's not the nastiness of tortures that really annoys us (some masterpieces in the past includes violence and gore, like "The Godfather"), but the thrill-less proceedings that are really off-putting. But what ever happened to Oscar nominated director Roland Joffe since "City of Joy"?

5 out of 5 stars DISGUSTING-LOVED IT!!   August 17, 2007

The movie "Captivity" starts with an cataleptic woman getting her head and upper body wrapped in gauze by an sicko freak. She wakes up and finds that she is totally tied down and the subjugator, using surgical tubing and funnels, pours car fuel into one of her facial orifices and out the other. She screams her way to a dreadful death. This is really one sick, twisted, gory flick, compared to "Hostel" "Saw" "Chainsaw" "Night of the living dead" type of movie. If you don't have the stomach for this type of movie, don't watch it!!
Emotional indifference rules the first part of Captivity, as Elisha's anguish is depicted in a matter-of-fact manner that is very disturbing. It is gruesome torture, big time, and many people might find this totally inappropriate for a movie. The thing is, people who enjoy going for the shock value of movies like this buy a ticket, if you don't want to see horror, gore, torture, pain and suffering don't go to the theater.
